brynna asked: Hi Will, we recently had a pretty in-depth discussion in class on the definition of "smart play," and it seems like everyone has a different definition. Some people thought it was reference-based, some thought that the performers were intelligent as people, and others thought it was how much people honored each others' ideas. What we did agree upon was that there were really good performers on both "smart" teams and non "smart" teams. I was curious to hear your opinion on the phrase.
I’d never thought of this distinction. I guess it depends on what someone’s expression is when they say a show is smart. If they look impressed and happy, they mean good improv that has a strong sense of a smart reality, and if they’re mad and disgusted, then they’re talking about some bunch of show offs who are making references for no reason, which would be a show I was in.
