Anonymous asked: So there's this idea that any given improviser is naturally a Ninja, Pirate, or Robot (an idea invented by Michael Delaney, correct me if I'm wrong). I don't know which one I am. Do you think that knowing which one you "are" - or I suppose knowing how you improvise and what your strengths are - is something to focus on?

It was Billy Merritt. Delaney believes everyone is either Led Zeppelin, Rick Moranis or one of the seven pillars of fine art. That’s not true. Anyway, if that metaphor isn’t illuminating your view of yourself just move onto to another metaphor? Yes, knowing yourself is important. Then again, no one fits completely into any one box so prepare to be seeing yourself differently over time as circumstances change etc.
